Holidaymakers flock to Turkey
Turkey: 01 May 2008Holidaymakers are flocking to Turkey, especially the city of Antalya in the south of the country, one tourism expert has claimed.
The chairman of Europe-Turkey Tourism Business Council told a journalist from the Anadolu Agency that Antalya is currently the most popular city in the Mediterranean.
In fact, bookings for hotels in Antalya have risen by a third so far this year and the number of tourists visiting the city in 2008 is expected to top nine million.
Many of these tourists will come from Russia, Germany, Ukraine, the Netherlands and Romania, according to Huseyin Baraner, who believes Antalya should be dubbed "the shining star of Europe".
The tourism chief also expects around 900 planes to take off and land at the international airport of Antalya this summer.
According to Turkey's statistical agency, national tourism revenues climbed 28.4 per cent in the first three months of 2008 when compared with the same period in 2007.
In addition, Turkey earned around £1.3 billion from tourism in the first quarter of the year.
