British tourists head to Turkey
Turkey: 02 May 2008A large number of holidaymakers are shunning Europe this summer and heading for Turkey instead because of the strength of the euro against the pound.
According to Lastminute.com, Turkey is this summer's number one holiday destination and this can be attributed to the fact that the euro is trading at about 80p, reports the Daily Mail.
This means prices in the eurozone are now 25 per cent more expensive than they were 24 months ago.
John Bevan, managing director of Lastminute.com, told the newspaper: 'If you look at bookings and searches, Turkey is our number one destination.
"Normally it would be number four or five, behind places like Spain. Amazingly, France has been pushed out of our top ten."
Meanwhile, new figures show that the number of plane passengers arriving in the city of Antalya in southern Turkey has climbed 17 per cent, reports Today's Zaman.
According to the Antalya Culture and Tourism Directorate, the total number of tourists who have visited Antalya since the start of 2008 is 1.13 million.
